Design Underground Bases with Glow Lichen and Torches
Lighting Underground Spaces
Caves and underground bases present unique lighting challenges. Glow lichen and torches are your primary light sources, and Just Like Rays Mod makes their light behavior realistic—spreading in circular patterns and casting shadows around stone and ore blocks.
Planning Your Underground Layout
1. Use glow lichen strategically. This block emits light naturally. Place it on cave ceilings or walls to create ambient light that spreads downward and outward in smooth circles.
2. Layer light sources. Combine glow lichen with torches at different heights. Torches cast more directional light, while glow lichen provides softer background illumination.
3. Create shadow depth. Position ore veins, pillars, and support beams to cast shadows. This adds visual interest and makes the space feel less flat.
4. Light corridors effectively. Place torches or glow blocks along tunnel walls at regular intervals. The circular light spread means you need fewer sources than traditional square-block lighting.
5. Test your design. Walk through your base and observe where shadows fall. Adjust light source positions if areas feel too dark or too bright.
6. Refresh if building extensively. After major excavation or construction, optimize your world to ensure light calculations reflect all changes.
