Choosing the Right Lance Material for Your Playthrough

Early Game: Wooden and Gold

When you are just starting out, the Wooden Lance is your entry point. It costs only basic wood materials and lets you learn how the lance handles before you commit iron or diamonds. The Gold Lance is the next step up and is worth crafting if you have spare gold ingots from mining or from a bastion raid. Gold is common enough that a Gold Lance is a reasonable throwaway weapon while you explore.

Mid Game: Iron and Diamond

The Iron Lance is the workhorse tier. Iron is abundant once you have a steady mine, so an Iron Lance is cheap to replace if you lose it. Move to the Diamond Lance when you have surplus diamonds and want a lance that lasts longer between repairs. Diamonds are limited early on, so only craft the Diamond Lance once your other diamond gear is sorted.

Late Game: Emerald and Netherite

The Emerald Lance sits above diamond in the material list, so craft it if you have a villager trading setup producing emeralds faster than you can spend them. The Netherite Lance is the final tier and the most expensive, requiring netherite ingots made from ancient debris and gold. Save your netherite for this lance only after your armor and tools are already upgraded.
