Direct Crafting vs Upgrading

Every barrel block in the mod can be obtained two ways: by crafting the barrel itself with its own crafting_shaped recipe, or by upgrading a lower-tier barrel with an upgrade item. Direct crafting is useful when you want a fresh barrel of a specific tier without owning the lower-tier barrel first.

The Barrel Blocks

The five barrel blocks are Iron Barrel, Gold Barrel, Diamond Barrel, Obsidian Barrel, and Netherite Barrel. Each has a crafting_shaped recipe. To craft one directly, arrange the recipe ingredients in the crafting grid in the required pattern and take the resulting barrel block.

The Upgrade Items

The five upgrade items are Wood to Iron Barrel Upgrade, Iron to Gold Barrel Upgrade, Gold to Diamond Barrel Upgrade, Diamond to Obsidian Barrel Upgrade, and Obsidian To Netherite Barrel Upgrade. Each is also a crafting_shaped recipe.

Use an upgrade item by holding it and using it on the matching lower-tier barrel block. The block transforms in place into the next tier, keeping its position and contents. This means you can either craft a high-tier barrel from raw materials, or build up through the tiers by crafting each upgrade in sequence. Both routes end at the same barrel blocks; choose direct crafting when you lack the lower-tier barrel, and choose upgrading when you want to preserve an existing barrel's stored items.
