Using Readers and Writers to Move Items, Fluids and Redstone

Choosing the Right Part

Match the part to the block you are touching. Part Inventory Reader and Part Inventory Writer handle chests and machines with slots. Part Fluid Reader handles tanks and the Squeezer or Drying Basin fluid buffers. Part Redstone Reader and Part Redstone Writer handle redstone signals on any face. Part Block Reader inspects the block itself, Part Machine Reader inspects machine state, Part Entity Reader tracks mobs and players, Part World Reader scans the area, Part Network Reader reads the logic network, and Part Extradimensional Reader reaches across dimensions. Part Audio Reader and Part Audio Writer handle sound events.

Writing the Card

Place a Variable Card in the Logic Programmer, choose the variable that matches your reader or writer, and save. Insert the card into the part. If a reader outputs one type and a writer expects another, insert an Input Variable Transformer or Output Variable Transformer between them, or use Input/Output Variable Transformers to convert both ways on a single part. A Part Enhancement: Offset shifts the target slot or position so you can address a specific inventory slot instead of the whole block.

Testing and Tidying

Attach a Part Display Panel to the cable and point a card at it so you can see the current value while you tune logic. Use a Wrench to rotate or detach parts without breaking the cable. Wrap exposed runs with Facade and hide lighting with Invisible Light, Menril Torch, or Menril Stone Torch. Keep a Portable Logic Programmer in your inventory so you can edit cards on site without returning to the Logic Programmer block.
