How to Use Mulch and Nulch

What Mulch does

Mulch is a ground cover block. Place it on top of dirt, grass, or farmland to change the surface look of a path, garden bed, or farm edge. It is a decorative layer, not a crop — you do not plant seeds in it.

To place Mulch, hold the block and right-click the top face of the block below. It sits flush like a carpet or leaf pile. Break it with any tool to pick it back up.

Nulch as the dark variant

Nulch is the darker counterpart to Mulch. Use the two together to create alternating bands of light and dark ground cover. A common pattern is a checker of Mulch and Nulch along a garden path, or Nulch under trees and Mulch in open beds.

Both blocks pair well with the other ground covers in the mod:

  • Leaf Piles (Acacia, Birch, Cherry, Dark Oak, Jungle, Mangrove, Azalea, Flowering Azalea) for tree bases.
  • Dune Grass, Frosty Fern, Ivy and Moss Clump for wilder terrain.
  • Earthen Clay and Loam for soil-toned paths.

Practical tips

Mulch and Nulch are shapeless-craftable, so check your recipe book for the exact inputs. If you cannot find the recipe, gather the plant and soil materials the mod uses and try combinations in a crafting grid — the recipe book will reveal it once you have the right items. Use Mulch to hide dirt paths in builds and Nulch to darken shaded areas under trees.
