How to Tame and Ride a Dragon

Raise It From an Egg

Taming starts at hatching. Place a Dragon Nest, set the egg on it, and supply the matching element (Dragon Ice and Dragon Ice Spikes for ice, heat for fire, open sky for lightning). The hatchling that emerges bonds to the player who is closest when it hatches. Feed the hatchling regularly — a fed dragon grows through juvenile to adult stages.

Saddle and Mount

Once the dragon reaches adulthood, apply a saddle. Approach from the side and mount. Flight controls are the same as any flying mount: look direction steers, and forward input gains altitude. To make the dragon sit, use the sit command while mounted or dismounted — a sitting dragon stays put and stops following you, which is useful when you need it to guard a base.

Breed and Collect

Two adult dragons of the same element can breed and produce a Dragon Egg, which you can then hatch on a new Dragon Nest. Adult dragons drop Block of Dragon Scales and Block of Dragon Bones when killed, and these feed into dragonsteel and armor crafting. Keep dragons away from villages — an adult loose in a settlement will burn or freeze everything nearby.
