How to Find Dragons and Dragon Caves

Search the Right Biomes

Dragons spawn in extreme terrain. Ice Dragons appear in frozen and snowy biomes; Fire Dragons appear in warm, dry biomes and near lava; Lightning Dragons appear in stormy high-altitude areas. Fly or travel by boat along coastlines and mountain ridges to spot them from a distance — a circling silhouette against the sky is the usual first sign.

Locate Dragon Caves

Dragon caves are large underground chambers, often under mountains or beneath surface nests. Look for a Dragon Nest block on the surface as a marker; the cave entrance is usually a wide shaft nearby. Bring torches, a pickaxe, and a stack of blocks to bridge gaps. Inside you will find Dragon Nest blocks, dragon eggs, and often a sleeping adult dragon.

Prepare Before Entering

Do not fight an adult dragon in an enclosed cave. Bring a Blindfold if you plan to approach a sleeping dragon without waking it, and carry a Bestiary to record what you find. If you only want the egg, sneak to the nest, grab it, and leave — combat in a cave usually ends badly because you cannot dodge breath attacks.

Record Your Finds

Use the Bestiary and Bestiary Lectern to log discovered species. This helps you track which dragons you have already encountered.
