Getting Better Shadows and Lighting in Your World

Understanding Shadow Behavior

Hex Shaders renders shadows based on sun position and time of day. Shadows are longest at sunrise and sunset, shortest at noon. Move around your world at different times to see how lighting changes—this is intentional and realistic.

Improving Shadow Visibility

Shadows appear most clearly on flat surfaces like grass, sand, and stone. Shadows are harder to see in dense forests or caves because overlapping blocks reduce contrast.

To showcase shadows effectively:

  • Build or explore in open areas during morning or evening
  • Use lighter-colored blocks (sand, concrete, quartz) as they show shadows more dramatically
  • Avoid building under thick tree canopies if you want visible shadows

Enhancing Overall Lighting

The shader's color grading automatically brightens your world while maintaining shadow depth. If areas feel too dark, this is usually intentional—caves and enclosed spaces should be dim. Use torches and lanterns to add warm light sources that complement the shader's cool ambient tones.
