The Lantern Oil Can is the fuel source for lanterns. Obtain it through the oil can recipe, then carry it with you whenever you deploy lanterns.

Refueling an Unlit Lantern

When a Lit Torch-style light source runs dry, lanterns behave the same way: they stop producing light and need fuel. Use the Lantern Oil Can on an Unlit Lantern to refill and relight it. The same applies to an Unlit Soul Lantern — the oil can services both lantern types.

Lanterns are worth the fuel cost because they are placeable light sources that survive where torches would be inconvenient. Keep the oil can in your hotbar next to your lanterns.

Managing Fuel on Long Trips

Lanterns drain as they burn. Before a long mining run, top off every Unlit Lantern you carry so you are not caught in the dark. If a lantern goes out underground, place it, use the Lantern Oil Can on it, and continue.

The oil can is reusable — it is a tool, not a consumable. Refill lanterns as often as needed without crafting a new can.
