Adjust Lighting Appearance for Different Environments

Understanding the Grayscale Effect

Grayscale Lightmap Shaders modifies how the game's lightmap—the invisible grid that controls brightness and color—renders across your world. This affects caves, night scenes, and shadowed areas most noticeably. The effect applies uniformly to all biomes and lighting conditions.

Customizing Your Experience

While the shader itself doesn't have in-game settings, you can layer other resource packs on top to fine-tune the look. Activate Grayscale Lightmap Shaders first in your resource pack list, then add texture packs above it. Packs loaded higher in the list take priority, so you can selectively restore color to specific blocks or adjust overall brightness perception.

Testing Different Times

Visit caves during daytime to see how the grayscale effect handles mixed lighting. Explore at night to experience the full retro atmosphere. The effect is most dramatic in deep caves and during moonlit nights, where the muted tones create that classic pre-beta feel.
