Reduce Shadow Harshness Under Trees and Buildings

Open Shader Configuration

Press Right Shift to access shader options, then select Shader Options from the menu.

Locate Shadow Settings

Find the Shadows section. You'll see controls for:

  • Shadow Distance — how far shadows extend from objects
  • Shadow Softness — controls the edge hardness of shadows
  • Shadow Intensity — brightness level of shadowed areas

Soften Shadow Edges

Increase the Shadow Softness slider to create smoother, more gradual shadow transitions. This reduces the harsh, defined lines you see under tree canopies and building overhangs, creating a more natural, diffused appearance.

If shadows feel too dark overall, raise Shadow Intensity slightly to brighten shadowed regions without losing depth.

Test Your Changes

Walk under trees and near buildings to observe the effect. Soft shadows should blend naturally with lit areas. Adjust incrementally—large changes can make shadows look unrealistic. Revisit settings during different times of day, as shadow behavior changes with sun position.
