Smithing Templates: Using the Darkening Template

The mod includes a smithing_transform recipe type, and the Darkening Template is the item that drives it. This is how you convert existing gear into a darker variant rather than crafting from scratch.

What You Need

• The Darkening Template itself.
• The base item you want to transform.
• The material the smithing recipe calls for.

Place these in a smithing table following the standard smithing layout: template in the template slot, base item in the base slot, addition material in the addition slot.

What It Applies To

The smithing_transform recipes cover a range of gear across the mod's tiers. If you have a piece you want to darken, check whether a transform recipe exists for that specific item before spending materials. Not every item has a darkening path.

Practical Tips

• Craft the Darkening Template first, then batch your transformations so you only set up the smithing table once.
• Keep a spare copy of the base item in case you want both the original and the darkened version.
• Smithing transforms preserve the item's identity — you are upgrading, not replacing.

If a piece has no transform recipe, craft the target item directly through its normal crafting recipe instead.
