Using Trapdoors in Dirt Deco Builds

Crafting Trapdoors

Dirt Trapdoor, Coarse Dirt Trapdoor, Clay Trapdoor, Gravel Trapdoor, Sand Trapdoor, Red Sand Trapdoor, Podzol Trapdoor, Mycelium Trapdoor, Grass Trapdoor, and Full Grass Trapdoor are shaped crafting recipes. Use the standard trapdoor pattern on a crafting table with the matching base block. Each trapdoor is a thin block that can be placed on the top, bottom, or side of a block.

Placement and Control

Right-click a placed trapdoor to open or close it. Trapdoors respond to redstone, so a lever or button lets you open them from a distance. Because they are thin, they work as shutters over a window, hatches over a hole, or covers over a chest recess. Place a trapdoor on the underside of a block to make a ceiling hatch, or on top of a block to make a floor hatch.

Decorative Uses

Trapdoors are the most flexible piece in the set. Use Dirt Trapdoor as a cap on a Dirt Fence post, or as a shutter beside a Dirt Door. Stack Sand Trapdoor and Red Sand Trapdoor as awning slats over a desert doorway. Line a Clay Trapdoor row along a wall as a decorative band. Podzol Trapdoor and Mycelium Trapdoor make good mushroom-farm covers.

Pairing with Doors and Fences

A full opening usually wants a door plus a trapdoor above it for a transom look. Match the trapdoor material to the door material — Dirt Door with Dirt Trapdoor, Gravel Door with Gravel Trapdoor — so the frame reads as one piece. Keep a few of each on hand when building so you can adjust on site.
