Making Slabs and Stairs for Dirt, Sand, and Clay Builds

Crafting Slabs

Dirt Slab, Coarse Dirt Slab, Clay Slab, Gravel Slab, Sand Slab, Red Sand Slab, Podzol Slab, Mycelium Slab, Grass Slab, and Full Grass Slab are shaped crafting recipes. Use the standard slab pattern on a crafting table with the matching base block. Slabs place as either a bottom half or a top half depending on where you aim, so you can build half-height steps, ledges, and ceilings.

Crafting Stairs

Each material also has stairs: Dirt Stairs, Coarse Dirt Stairs, Clay Stairs, Gravel Stairs, Sand Stairs, Red Sand Stairs, Podzol Stairs, Mycelium Stairs, Grass Stairs, and Full Grass Stairs. Craft them with the standard stair pattern using the matching base block. Stairs let you climb one block per step and can be placed facing any direction, so they work for roofs, terraces, and ramps.

Combining Them

Slabs and stairs share a palette, so use them together. A Sand Stairs ramp flanked by Sand Slab kerbs makes a clean desert path. Podzol Stairs and Podzol Slab build a taiga cabin roof. Clay Stairs and Clay Slab suit a pottery-yard wall. Full Grass Stairs and Full Grass Slab give you a solid green surface for garden tiers.

Practical Notes

Slabs and stairs are not full blocks, so mobs cannot spawn on top slabs and light passes differently. Use bottom slabs as flooring to prevent spawns in a dirt bunker. Craft a stack of each at a time — stairs consume more base blocks per craft than slabs, so plan your material budget before you start a large terrace.
