Building Fences and Fence Gates from Dirt and Sand

Crafting Fences

Dirt Fence, Coarse Dirt Fence, Clay Fence, Gravel Fence, Sand Fence, Red Sand Fence, Podzol Fence, Mycelium Fence, Grass Fence, and Full Grass Fence are all shaped crafting recipes. Use the standard fence pattern on a crafting table with the matching base block to produce the fence. Fences connect to each other and to solid blocks, so you can run a continuous line around a pen or garden.

Adding Gates

Every fence has a matching gate: Dirt Fence Gate, Coarse Dirt Fence Gate, Clay Fence Gate, Gravel Fence Gate, Sand Fence Gate, Red Sand Fence Gate, Podzol Fence Gate, Mycelium Fence Gate, Grass Fence Gate, and Full Grass Fence Gate. Craft the gate with the same base block using the gate pattern. Place a gate in a gap in your fence line; right-click to swing it open and closed. Gates also respond to redstone, so a pressure plate on either side makes a hands-free entry.

Choosing the Right Material

Match the fence to the ground it stands on. Sand Fence and Red Sand Fence suit desert and beach pens. Podzol Fence and Mycelium Fence fit taiga and mushroom-island builds. Grass Fence and Full Grass Fence read as living hedges. Clay Fence and Gravel Fence work for paths and quarry edges.

Layout Advice

Leave one block of gap per gate and keep fence runs straight where possible — corners connect automatically. Combine a fence line with Dirt Slab or Sand Slab as a low kerb, and top a post with Dirt Trapdoor for a cap. Craft gates in pairs so both ends of a path match.
