How to Recover Items After Death

Your Grave Appears

When you die, a grave spawns at your death location containing your items. The grave block is tied to your Tombstone if one is placed, otherwise it appears where you died.

Opening the Grave

Craft a Grave Key. Right-click the grave with the Grave Key to open it and retrieve your items. The Grave Key is consumed. For repeated use, craft an Enchanted Grave Key via the tombstone:enchanted_grave_key recipe — it is not consumed.

If you cannot craft a key, break the grave block. Items may drop but you recover them.

Grave Key Variants

Only the Grave Key and Enchanted Grave Key open graves. The Enchanted Grave Key is the durable option: make one early and keep it in your inventory at all times.

Preventing Loss

Place a Tombstone at your base. On death, your grave anchors there if the Tombstone is set. Use the Tablet of Recall to return to a marked location quickly, or the Tablet of Home to return home. The Scroll of Preservation protects items from being lost. The Book of Soulbound lets you bind items so they stay with you through death.
