Compressing Food: Apple, Bread, Beef and Baked Potato Chains

Food Chains Available

Four food lines are registered with full five-tier compression: Apple I–V, Bread I–V, Beef I–V, and Baked Potato I–V. Each tier is a distinct item, so Apple III is not interchangeable with Apple I in a recipe — you must match the tier the recipe calls for.

Stockpiling for a Trip

Before a long expedition, compress your cooked and raw food upward. Take a stack of Baked Potato and compress it to Baked Potato I, then II, then III, IV, and V. A single Tier V entry holds the equivalent of a huge amount of the base food in one inventory slot, which is the main reason to use the chain. Do the same with Beef if you run a cattle farm, and with Bread if you run a wheat farm.

Unpacking at Camp

When you need to actually eat, reverse the chain: take the Tier V item and craft it back down one tier at a time until you reach the base item. Apples work the same way — compress orchard harvests to Apple V for storage, then break them back down to plain Apples when you want to eat or brew. Keep one chest dedicated to compressed food and one to uncompressed food so you never accidentally feed a Tier III item into a recipe expecting the base item.
