How to Color-Code Your Storage With Colored Chests, Barrels, and Drums

Crafting Colored Storage Blocks

Colored Chests, Barrels, and Item Drums are crafted at a crafting table using shaped recipes. The color set includes Black, Blue, Brown, Cyan, Gray, Green, Light Blue, Light Gray, Lime, Magenta, Orange, Pink, Purple, and Red, plus the remaining dye colors. Each color is available as a Chest, a Barrel, and an Item Drum — for example, Red Chest, Red Barrel, and Red Item Drum.

Assigning Colors to Categories

Decide what each color means before you place blocks. A common scheme: Black Chest for ores and ingots, Green Barrel for food and seeds, Red Item Drum for redstone and mechanisms, Blue Chest for building blocks, and Brown Barrel for wood and crafting materials. Place the matching colored blocks together so you can find a category at a glance.

Building a Color-Coded Storage Wall

Line up your colored Chests, Barrels, and Item Drums along a wall. Because every color exists in all three shapes, you can use shape as a second signal — for example, Chests for bulk items, Barrels for tools, and Item Drums for small components. Breaking any block returns it and its contents, so you can rearrange the wall as your categories change. If you also craft Backpacks in the same colors, your portable storage will match your base storage, making it easy to move a category between the two.
