Troubleshooting Bloom Effects and Light Artifacts
Understanding Bloom Behavior
Bloom creates a soft glow around light sources like torches, lanterns, and glowstone. While beautiful, excessive bloom can cause visual artifacts or performance issues on low-end systems.
Fixing Common Bloom Problems
Excessive glow or halos: If bloom appears too intense or creates unwanted halos around bright blocks, access shader options and reduce bloom intensity or radius. Start by lowering these values by 10–20% and test.
Flickering or strobing: This typically occurs when bloom interacts poorly with fast-moving light sources. Ensure your quality profile matches your GPU capability. If flickering persists, temporarily disable bloom and re-enable it after restarting the game.
Performance drops near light sources: Bloom calculations are expensive near many light blocks. Reduce the number of active light sources in your immediate area, or lower bloom quality in shader settings.
Verification
Build a small test area with multiple torches and lanterns. Observe bloom behavior from different distances and angles. Adjust settings until the glow looks natural without artifacts. Remember that bloom intensity varies by time of day—test during both day and night for accurate results.
