How to Craft and Place Chinese Roofs (Black, Yellow, and Thatch)

Choosing Your Roof Family

Three roof material families exist: Black Tile Roof, Yellow Tile Roof, and Thatch Roof. Each family has matching ridge, slab, and edge pieces. Start with the flat panels — Black Tile Roof, Yellow Tile Roof, or Thatch Roof — then branch into the trim blocks.

Building a Tiled Roof

1. Craft the base panel (Black Tile Roof or Yellow Tile Roof) using the shaped recipe for that family.

2. Run Black Tile Roof Ridge or Yellow Tile Roof Ridge along the peak where two slopes meet.

3. Cap the ridge ends with Black Tile Roof Ridge Top or Yellow Tile Roof Ridge Top.

4. Use Black Tile Roof Slab or Yellow Tile Roof Slab on the lower course so the eave steps outward.

5. Finish the eave line with Black Tile Roof Slab Top or Yellow Tile Roof Slab Top.

6. For angled corners, place Black Tile Roof J or Yellow Tile Roof J.

7. Where the roof meets a wall, use Black Tile Ridge Roof Edge W or Black Tile Ridge Roof Edge T W.

Thatch Roofs

Thatch Roof, Thatch Roof Slab, Thatch Ridge Roof, Thatch Ridge Roof TOP, Thatch Ridge Roof Edge, Thatch Ridge Roof Edge TOP, and Thatch Roof Tile Edge form a complete set. Thatch pieces read as lower-status buildings, so pair them with Rammed Earth or White Ash walls.

Dynamic Variants

Bench Dyn, Chair Dyn, Black Tile Roof Dyn, Black Tile Roof Ridge Dyn, Black Tile Roof Ridge J Dyn, Black Tile Roof Ridge Top Dyn, Black Tile Roof Slab Dyn, and Black Tile Roof Slab Top Dyn are the animated counterparts of their static versions. Use them where you want visible motion in the roof line.
