Reduce Lag While Maintaining Visual Quality
Identify Performance Bottlenecks
Enable your frame rate counter (F3 in vanilla Minecraft) and note your FPS in different environments. Open areas and sky views typically run faster; dense forests and caves stress the shader more.
Prioritize High-Impact Settings
Start by reducing shadow distance—this is often the heaviest load. Decrease it until frame rate improves, then increase slightly for balance. Next, lower shadow softness or blur quality. These changes preserve the shader's visual character while cutting processing demands significantly.
Adjust Secondary Options
Reduce reflection quality or disable advanced water reflections if needed. Lower cloud density or disable volumetric effects if available. Decrease ambient occlusion intensity—this darkens crevices and corners, and high values are computationally expensive.
Test Systematically
Change one setting at a time and play for a minute to assess impact. This helps you understand which adjustments matter most for your system. Save a configuration once you reach acceptable performance.
Monitor Long-Term
Play for extended sessions to ensure frame rate remains stable. Lag often appears during complex scenes with many light sources or reflective surfaces.
