Optimize Shadow Softness for Performance
Locate Shadow Settings
Open the shader options menu and find the shadows or lighting section. Look for options labeled shadow softness, shadow blur, or penumbra settings.
Understand the Trade-Off
Increasing shadow softness creates smooth, realistic transitions between lit and shadowed areas—ideal for a cinematic look. However, softer shadows demand more processing power. If you experience frame rate drops, reducing softness helps recover performance without removing shadows entirely.
Adjust for Your System
Start with medium softness settings and test your frame rate while walking through varied terrain—forests, mountains, and open areas all stress shadows differently. If performance is smooth, gradually increase softness for a more polished appearance.
If frame rate suffers, lower the shadow softness value incrementally. You can also reduce shadow distance (how far shadows render) as an alternative optimization.
Apply and Monitor
Save your changes and play for several minutes in different lighting conditions. Shadows should look clean and natural without harsh edges, while maintaining your target frame rate.
