The Estus Flask is your healing item. Its capacity is increased by consuming an Estus Shard. Each shard you use adds to the flask's total charges. Shards are the progression currency for your flask, so collect every one you find.

The Upgrade Step

With an Estus Shard in your inventory, use it to upgrade the Estus Flask. The shard is consumed and the flask's charge count increases. Do this as soon as you obtain a shard — there is no reason to hold it. The flask itself is not consumed or replaced during the upgrade.

Managing Charges

Drink from the Estus Flask to heal. Each drink uses one charge. When charges run out, rest at a bonfire to refill the flask to its current maximum. Because the maximum only rises through Estus Shards, your survivability is directly tied to how many shards you have consumed.

Practical Loop

Explore, find an Estus Shard, consume it to raise your flask maximum, then rest at a bonfire to refill. Repeat. This loop is the backbone of staying alive between checkpoints.
