How to Reach a Hot Air Balloon

Finding Your Target

Hot air balloons spawn high in the sky across the overworld. Look up frequently while traveling, especially during clear weather when visibility is best. Balloons are large and colorful, making them visible from considerable distances if you know where to look.

Building Up

Once you've spotted a balloon, you need to reach its basket. The most reliable method is to build a pillar or staircase directly beneath it. Use blocks you have readily available—wood, stone, or dirt work well. Build straight up until you reach the basket level.

Flying Alternative

If you have access to an Elytra or creative flight, you can fly directly to the balloon. This is faster but requires you to already have these items.

Entering the Basket

When you reach the balloon's altitude, carefully approach the basket. You should be able to jump or walk onto it. The basket is solid and safe to stand on. Once inside, you can access the main payload chest and begin looting.
