Troubleshoot Performance Issues on Older Macs
Start with Low-End Presets
Many shader configurations include preset profiles for different hardware tiers. Begin with the lowest performance tier, then gradually increase settings to find your Mac's limit.
Reduce Shadow Distance First
Shadow rendering is typically the most demanding feature. Lowering shadow draw distance (how far shadows render from the player) often provides the biggest performance gain with minimal visual loss.
Lower Resolution and Sampling
If available, reduce internal render resolution or anti-aliasing quality. These settings have significant performance impact on integrated graphics common in older Macs.
Monitor Frame Rate During Gameplay
Spend time in demanding areas—dense forests, large builds, or sunset scenes—to identify where performance drops occur. Adjust specific settings targeting those problem areas rather than reducing everything uniformly.
Consider Render Distance Trade-offs
If shader performance remains poor, reducing render distance often helps more than disabling the shader entirely. This preserves the visual improvements while maintaining playable frame rates.
