Set Up an Automated Mob Farm with Entity Sensors

Choosing the Right Sensor

Entity sensors are the foundation of any automated mob detection system. Select your sensor type based on what you want to catch:

  • Wood sensors detect any entity (mobs, players, items, animals)
  • Stone sensors detect only living creatures
  • Mossy cobblestone sensors specifically target monsters
  • Netherrack sensors detect Nether mobs
  • End Stone sensors catch End mobs

Building Your Detection Setup

1. Place your chosen sensor facing the direction mobs will travel through your farm

2. Right-click with an empty hand to adjust the scan distance—increase it to cover your entire killing zone

3. Right-click with a redstone torch to visualize the green detection range outline

4. Connect redstone wire from the sensor output to your farm's activation mechanism (hoppers, pistons, or damage dealers)

5. Test by spawning or luring a mob into the detection zone—the sensor should trigger your redstone circuit

For multi-type farms, place multiple sensors in a row, each tuned to different mob types, and wire them to separate collection or processing systems. Adjust distances carefully to avoid false triggers from unintended entities.
