How to Use Hooks on a Fishing Rod

Attaching a Hook

Hooks are the part of the rig that changes what you catch. A Bobber is required on the line for the rod to function, and a Hook is added alongside it. Combine a Fishing Line, a Bobber, and a Hook in a crafting grid to assemble a working rig, then attach it to a Fishing Rod. The base rod is the Iron Fishing Rod; upgrade to the Golden Fishing Rod or Neptunium Fishing Rod for better durability and loot.

Choosing the Right Hook

Each hook biases your catch toward different results:

• Iron Hook — the basic all-purpose hook.
• Gold Hook — improves the quality of loot from the water.
• Double Hook — can bring up more than one fish per cast.
• Heavy Hook — favors larger, heavier fish.
• Light Hook — favors smaller, faster fish.
• Obsidian Hook and Double Obsidian Hook — tougher hooks that survive long sessions and pull from deeper loot pools.
• Glowstone Hook — useful when fishing in low light or at night.
• Nether Star Hook — the top-tier hook for the best possible catches.
• Note Hook and Obsidian Note Hook — special hooks that play a note when something bites.

Fishing for Loot

With a hook attached you can pull up fish like Bluegill, Carp, Minnow, Perch, and Catfish, plus non-fish items such as Driftwood, Fish Bones, Algae, Leech, Message In A Bottle, Lockbox, and Box. Open Lockboxes and Boxes for extra rewards.
