How to Craft and Use the Flashlight

Crafting the Flashlight

The Flashlight is made with a shaped crafting recipe. Arrange the required ingredients in the crafting grid in the pattern shown by the recipe, then take the finished Flashlight from the output slot.

Using the Flashlight

Hold the Flashlight to light up the area in front of you. It is a handheld light source, so it works while you are walking, mining, or exploring. Use it in caves, at night on the surface, or inside dark builds where you have not placed torches yet.

If you want light without holding an item, craft the Mining Helmet and wear it in your helmet slot. The Mining Helmet keeps your hands free, while the Flashlight is held. Choose the Flashlight when you want a directed beam of light and do not mind using a hand slot. Choose the Mining Helmet when you need to swing tools or place blocks while staying lit.

For a light you can set down or carry as a separate object, craft the Mining Lantern or the Ender Lantern. All of these light items come from shaped crafting recipes. Gather the ingredients, craft at a crafting table, and keep the Flashlight in your hotbar for quick access during exploration.
